Sharman Kadish

Dr Sharman Kadish is the Director of Jewish Heritage UK

Sharman Kadish was born in London and educated at University College London, St. Antony's College, Oxford (where she gained her Doctorate) and at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.  She is a Research Fellow and part-time lecturer in Jewish Studies in the Centre for Jewish Studies, Department of Religions & Theology at the University of Manchester, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and for ten years was a Council Member of the Jewish Historical Society of England.

Active in Jewish heritage conservation since the mid 1980s, Dr Kadish has completed a major Survey of the Jewish Built Heritage in the UK and Ireland, with the backing of English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund. She has much experience and wide-ranging contacts in the heritage world, having previously worked as a consultant to English Heritage.

In her rôle as Director of Jewish Heritage UK, Dr Kadish is assisted by the Trustees, a Consulting Architect and a Technical Consultant.

Sharman Kadish’s many Publications on Anglo-Jewish history and heritage include: Bolsheviks and British Jews (Frank Cass 1992) [winner of a Choice Outstanding Academic Book Award in 1993]; "A Good Jew and a Good Englishman": The Jewish Lads’ and Girls’ Brigade 1895-1995 (Vallentine Mitchell 1995) and (ed.) Building Jerusalem: Jewish Architecture in Britain (Vallentine Mitchell 1996). She has also written Synagogues in the Heinemann Library Places of Worship series for children (1998) and Bevis Marks Synagogue 1701-2001 (English Heritage 2001). Her most recent publications are Jewish Heritage in England (English Heritage 2006) and Jewish Heritage in Gibraltar (Spire Books 2007). The Synagogues of Britain and Ireland: An Architectural History is in preparation, to be published with the support of The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art with photography by English Heritage.
