Jewish
Heritage UK is dedicated to caring for the historic buildings, sites and
collections of Britain’s Jewish community. The task
of Jewish Heritage UK is the protection of British Jewry’s
material cultural heritage, covering synagogues and cemeteries and also
movable property such as archives, artefacts and ritual silver. The
Director is Dr Sharman Kadish. Active in Jewish heritage
conservation since the mid 1980s, she has served as Project Director of
the Survey of the Jewish Built Heritage since 1997 and has
published several books on Anglo-Jewish history and heritage. Jewish
Heritage UK
fills an important gap in providing independent professional support to
individual congregations, trustees and synagogue organisations which are
responsible for historic buildings, sites and collections. They can turn
to Jewish Heritage UK for advice when faced with the challenges
posed by the maintenance and management of historic buildings and the
practicalities of carrying out repairs to recognised conservation
standards, for guidance through the Listing and Planning process and above
all, for help in finding imaginative ways of keeping fine old buildings
usefully alive. Jewish
Heritage UK
promotes British Jewry’s cultural heritage to the wider public through
encouraging participation in The Civic Trust’s Heritage Open Days and
the European Jewish Heritage Day, organised by B’nai Brith, which since
2000 has become a popular annual event in the UK. |
